In depth

Verdict

Trigger The Light is preferred to Portland Bill but while Durante and The Speaker both have plenty to find on the book, neither are dismissed. The selection has presumably had his problems this season as he hasn't been seen since making a winning chase debut at Kempton in November. The form hasn't worked out but the winner impressed in some quarters as victory earned him quotes of 33-1 for the SunAlliance chase. He handled heavy ground as a hurdler, is sure to be straight enough and is a horse to keep on your side. Portland Bill has suffered a couple of blips over fences, falling at Cheltenham and then pulling up; he had a confidence boosting run over hurdles last time and should be a factor if back to his best but he's unraced on ground worse than soft. The Speaker makes least appeal of the quartet but Durante has already threatened to make up into a better chaser than hurdler. He came close to making a winning debut over fences at this track over 3m 2 on heavy ground just over a year ago. He fell on his only subsequent outing over fences but may be capable of springing a surprise if he's able to bounce back to form. There are too many 'ifs' there though and Trigger The Light will do for us.
