In depth

Verdict

We're going to take The Ring on with Captain Aubrey. The Ring has leading claims under his penalty having opened his account for Neil King in a marathon at Warwick. That run came only five days ago and must have taken something out of him; it will be a decent performance if he can give weight away all round on a track as testing as this so soon after that outing. The problem is that the case for the opposition isn't strong. Aheadofhistime won well at Chepstow but that was a modest race over 2 miles 1; he did go close over 3 miles at Leicester on his penultimate start though so is one of the likelier ones. Moustique De L'Isle has more than enough ability but doesn't always consent to show it and hasn't won since 2006; his yard is in fair form. El Batal is another runner from an in-form yard and isn't dismissed whilst it will be interesting to see if the money comes for No More Tom as he was sent off as favourite on his chase bow at Hereford. The case for the selection is not strong given that he has pulled up on each of his last two starts. However, he ran out a convincing winner over course and distance on his previous outing and it's hoped that a return to the scene of his greatest moment can help Captain Aubrey return to the front rank.
