In depth

Verdict

A race where the market will doubtless tell us plenty and in the absence of that information, Calculating is put up as the selection ahead of Spares And Repairs and Able Dara. Calculating has had plenty of chances but in fairness to the horse, he has ran some solid races at this venue and Mark Usher might just have found the ideal race for him this afternoon. Spares And Repairs has less miles on the clock. A former bumper performer, it is something of a surprise to see him remaining at a trip that is probably sharp enough on balance. Able Dara finished second to Turbo Linn on his debut in bumpers. On the flipside, he was well beaten on his second start at Doncaster. Newgate was backed from 50/1 into 16/1 on debut but the layers never saw their satchels in any threat. Flight Dream looks a tricky ride and his rider will deserve every penny of his fee. Spellman went through the Tattersalls sales ring for 8000 guineas and is one to watch closely on a first run on the level. Calculating is not a mortgage job by any stretch of the imagination but this is his most realistic target for some time.
