Verdict

A small field and a race that could develop into a tactical affair as a result, but SMALLJOHN should still have the ability to win it, with Madison Belle next best. The selection has run well in three recent claimers, one of which came over course and distance in November when he was narrowly beaten into third. Bryan Smart's runners are going very well and he should be capable at these favourable weights of improving upon the trainer's excellent start to 2009. Madison Belle has a 6f course win to her name and the Karl Burke-trained filly has, according to the assessor, improved a stone since that success some seven weeks ago. She did not quite have the stamina to win over 9f at Wolverhampton last week but this trip may be ideal for her. We will find out more today and she is respected. Sally's Dilemma is weighted to finish close to Madison Belle after the handicapper has relented to an extent but she doesn't quite look in good enough form to do anything other than watch at present, while Art Discovery would be interesting if supported but we have seen nothing to recommend him thus far and he will also receive a handicap mark after this run so is probably another best watched. Smalljohn is the one for us.
