In depth
Verdict
Ben Casey gets the vote over Colonel Cotton, Native Title and Shadow Jumper. Dandy Nichols has two runners here and the market will tell us more no doubt, but Colonel Cotton is sure to have his supporters based on past efforts. However, we look to Ben Casey to grab the distinction of becoming the first winner of the new year on the Fibresand surface. Bryan Smart's charge was just beaten on his last outing here in November when second to Mulberry Lad in similar company. The trainer was left seething afterwards as he was hit with a fine and jockey Paul Eddery suspended for 16 days. In addition the horse was banned for 40 days, but hopefully the new year will bring an immediate change of luck for all concerned. Native Title, like stablemate Colonel Cotton, has something of an absence to overcome and is best watched, while Shadow Jumper is a course-and-distance winner would not be out of it either. St Ivian has gone off the boil somewhat but would definitely be involved on his best form as well. We shall return to Ben Casey as the selection.
