This valuable race has produced a very good line-up with Polly Alexander getting a tentative vote from us ahead of Destinaite, Captain Hurricane and Gortumblo. The selection has won two of her five races to date and ran very well when second in an Italian Listed race last time. While she has yet to fully prove she stays a stiff six furlongs, she could be worth chancing in that respect and, having the advantage of racing off a low weight, she can go well. Destinaite beat subsequent Royal Ascot-placed Juantorena last time but he has to concede weight to the field. The Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Captain Hurricane was only just run out of things on his Yarmouth debut, should come on for that outing but would probably not want the going to be too firm. There is nothing wrong with Gortumblo's form, the colt having finished third in the Listed Woodcote Stakes last and today's stiff six furlongs should, in theory, suit him better. On his debut, over five furlongs at Goodwood, he finished a length-and-a-quarter ahead of Asian Tiger, who is now a pound better off, and five-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of Detonate, who is now four pounds better off. Happy Event surprised connections by winning at Windsor on his debut as they considered him to be backward. We will find out more about him today, as indeed we will about Evanesce, who is just a pound worse off for the half-length he finished behind the selection at Ripon in April over five furlongs on good to soft. As we say, it is not a straightforward race and the betting might prove a better guide to you but, for what it is worth, we side with Polly Alexander.
