      Verdict

      DAPPER MAN (NAP) wasn’t at his best here last time after stumbling at the start and finishing behind third-placed Van Gerwen. He gets another chance having finished ahead of the latter at Pontefract before that when also beating Burj Malinka and Albegone. The latter pair have both won subsequently so that form looks solid enough. High Security escapes a penalty for winning an apprentices’ race here, with Young Tiger behind, though his rider was claiming 7lb on that occasion.

      Van Gerwen 14-1 (9-7) Midfield, lost ground and towards rear after 1f, closed over 2f out and soon waiting for room, switched right and some headway over 1f out, ridden and kept on into 3rd well inside final furlong, 3rd of 7, 3 1/4l behind James Watt (9-9) at Ripon 5f hcp (5) gd in May.
