A moderate maiden to kick-start Pontefract's action and Hathlen is expected to lead them all a merry dance - with stablemate Negwa fancied to cope with the step up in trip and give him the most to do. The well bred newcomer Darsalam is one to watch in the betting - whilst Jimmy Gee and Fanling Lady appeal most out of the remainder with previous experience. Negwa, as a half-sister to Island Sound, can confidently be expected to cope with this first try at 10 furlongs; especially as her latest start left the impression that a mile in on the sharp side for her at present. However, Hathlen is also bred to get a trip and his overall profile looks the more progressive at this stage. The son of Singspiel was just out pointed over nine furlongs at Redcar last month in a truly run race that has a solid look to it from a form book perspective. He was given a mark of just 78 after that performance - which gives his connections plenty to play with at this sort of level - and Hathlen can leave his previous form behind him with a victory before moving on to handicaps in the future. Dumfries, with Frankie Dettori booked for the ride, is another that has to be given a chance. But he ran very green last time and may still have bit of learning to do before being confidently backed to win.
