      Verdict

      Mark Johnston saddles two as he bids to win this staying contest for the third year running but Sofia's Rock has been treading water off his current mark and Star Of The East is also looking in the handicapper’s grip now, though has won over track and trip this year. Ian Williams’ pair, Stars Over The Sea and Byron Flyer, were second and third over 2m at Ascot two weeks ago and have leading claims while Cosmelli was a 33/1 winner of the Northumberland Plate consolation race at Newcastle in June though has yet to win on Turf in this country. ATTY PERSSE finished tailed off over 1m5f here last year so stamina could be an issue but he’s had 12 months to strengthen up and should have the class to defy top weight if lasting home.
