Five of the last seven winners of this have started at single-figure odds and seven of the last nine winners have represented yards better known for their jumpers. Pied Piper fits nicely into both categories and Ryan Moore takes the ride for Gordon Elliott despite the fact that Willie Mullins, a regular employer of Moore in races of this type, runs five. Mullins won the race three times between 2018 and 2020 but his team doesn’t look as strong as usual. Only one three-year-old has won this in 24 years and Grand Providence is penalised for beating Sheishybrid in a trial for this here three weeks ago. Recent Newbury winner Not So Sleepy and Zoffee were third and fourth respectively last year but are worse off at the weights with runner-up VINO VICTRIX. Although the latter ran well in the Northumberland Plate in June, this has been his long-term target and he should reverse latest Goodwood running with Grand Providence at the revised weights. Bigger-priced runners who make some appeal include Blazeon Five, who beat the subsequent Goodwood winner Temporize at Ascot in July, but Aztec Empire, who has yet to win on Turf, needs forgiving a shocking effort last time at Haydock. Golden Shot shapes as though he’ll appreciate this longer trip and makes most appeal of the remainder.
