In depth
Verdict
The Craven meeting kicks off with a very open maiden event with some top yards represented, Kalamkar is just given the nod ahead of Top Gear and Aviemore. The Michael Stoute always has to be watched carefully at this meeting, and with Stream Of Gold taking the Lincoln it appears his horses are well forward. Kalamkar looks the pick of his two newcomers, he is owned by the Aga Khan and is superbly bred by Daylami, out of a Green Dancer mare. He will know his job first time up as will stable companion Aviemore, who is by Selkirk out of an Unfuwain mare. Johnny Murtagh rides this one and Mick Kinane is on board our selection so there are no real clues as to which is the stables first string, but Kalamkar is the more likely on paper. The form horse appears to be Top Gear, who put in a very promising first effort last season when chasing home Night Hour in a hot maiden at Salisbury, if the newcomers are nothing special he should be the one to benefit. The two Sheik Ahmed Al Maktoum runners, Karrnak and Welling should be watched in the market, but Kalamkar is a sporting choice in a fascinating event.
