A cracking way to start day-two of the 2004 UltimateBet.com sponsored Guineas meeting at Newmarket and none of the nine contenders can be confidently ruled out of going close in this tight handicap. The shortlist includes: Border Subject, who won this race in 2002 but has a little to prove off a 9lb higher mark, Chookie Heiton, who ran well on his reappearance at Doncaster and has sound claims if the rain holds off, and Zilch, who is in flying form at present and is still potentially well treated; in spite of being set to race off a 5lb higher mark than for his latest success. However, a chance is taken with the progressive Seel Of Approval, whose record when fresh is not as bad as face value would have you believe and he did nothing but improve as last season went on. It is also interesting that Darryll Holland has seen fit to keep faith with the son of Polar Falcon and the partnership make plenty of appeal at the likely prices. Stablemate Border Subject should ensure that Seel Of Approval gets the strong pace he needs and the five-year-old could have the run of the race if he is ready to go first time out this term. Obviously, the betting market will give some indications in this area and it may be prudent to hold fire for a late play on the selection. The weights appear to give Border Subject a fair amount to do on his first start for 302 days so Chookie Heiton may be the one to be on if negative signs emerge for Seel Of Approval in the preliminaries.
