Plenty will depend on how much rain arrives in the Newcastle area, but, as Welsh Emperor is a transformed character on soft ground, he is fancied to make the most of the weight he receives from Somnus and The Kiddykid, who spearhead the challenge in a good quality renewal of this Group 3 prize. Cut in the ground also brings the best out of Bahamian Pirate and Goldeva, who should not be underestimate despite having a bit to do from their wide draws. However, a bigger threat could come from Somnus - winner of the Sprint Cup at Haydock last season - who has always tended to need his first run of the season and is expected to be a different proposition here. Tim Easterby's charge is versatile regarding his best ground and will surely be involved in the shake-up if he can utilise his turn of foot. However, his 8lb penalty could be his undoing and it will take a monumental effort from the gelding to give weight and a beating to some of his elders here. The Kiddykid also picks up a penalty after his narrow defeat of Arakan at The Curragh last month. He too should give them all plenty to think about as any further ease in the ground will not be a problem in the slightest for him. That said, a line through Goldeva also gives him a little to find with the selection and he may have to settle for a minor role today. A move for So Will I will be very interesting though, as Marcus Tregoning's charge is open to acres of improvement. The Inchinor colt is also very well berthed on the far rail and will be a threat to all if he handles the ground. The betting market will give the best indication on that score and a close eye should be kept on the book as things unfold. However, as Welsh Emperor has no questions to answer regarding the going, is well treated at the weights and has almost the best of the draw. He is too hard to oppose for us and appears to represent good value at the likely prices on offer.
