      Verdict

      Poet was attempting to give 6lb to Clowance when beaten two lengths by Roger Charlton's mare in the St Simon's Stakes over C&D in October. He'd need the rains to arrive to take his chance here, however, while the winner is also much better with give in the ground. Bridge Of Gold could also miss out if the ground remains on the fast side of good so this may be best left to ALLIED POWERS. Michael Bell's charge held his own in top-class company last season, winning in this grade at Longchamp in May before going on to land a Group 2 contest at Chantilly and he gets 5lb from Indian Days, who has a similar profile but often needs a run to put him straight. Halicarnassus has been a grand servant to connections and won't be far away again but Verdant needs to step up again on some solid handicap form to win this.
