In depth

Verdict

Richard Guest's string have been quietly running into form and Vulcan Lane is fancied to deliver on the promise he showed at Sedgefield last month; possibly at the main expense of Julies Boy and Before The Mast, who both arrive in good heart. Before The Mast was highly regarded in his early days with Noel Chance but lost his way over hurdles. Milton Harris seems to have rekindled his enthusiasm of late and the son of Broken Hearted has adapted well to the Chasing game. Charlie Poste gets on well with the nine-year-old and the partnership should again be seen to good effect this afternoon. Julies Boy has been kept busy through the winter and has returned three wins for his troubles. However, he is now on a stiff mark for what he has achieved and the handicapper looks to be catching up with him. Therefore, Vulcan Lane is a more sporting option here. The son of Star Way won here over hurdles a couple of years ago and was obviously suited by the sharp right-handed turns. He also has more experience of fences behind him and is fancied to be a touch too wily for the rest today.
