A trappy novices' handicap chase that might go the way of R'CAM ahead of Cartier Opera and The Snail. Emma Lavelle's charge stays this trip comfortably and scored tidily enough last time having idled on the run in. That was the gelding's first success of any kind but he'd shown promise on more than one occasion and perhaps that first visit to the winners' enclosure can provide the horse the platform from which to add to it here off a 6lbs higher mark. There are plenty of dangers in a competitive race, headed by Cartier Opera. Venetia Williams' nine-year-old remains pretty unexposed over fences having had just eight attempts but his tendency to throw in the odd mistake is a major concern, as was shown when the gelding unseated twice in November when both races were there for the taking. However, he jumped better last time behind a subsequent scorer and a 1lb rise from the assessor has to be regarded as generous ¿ there's little doubt from us that the horse can win off this mark, whether today or at some point in the future. The Snail has been given a two-month break ahead of this hat-trick bid and must have a chance of landing it despite the handicapper's reassessment, although the horse was pulled up on his only try on soft ground so the conditions must be a concern. Ballymorn is unexposed and represents powerful connections but has a lot of improving to do to reverse early November form with Cartier Opera, whilst Classic Chic is yet to convince over fences and looks worth opposing as does Al Qanoon who was beaten a long way off this mark last time. Cresswell Ruby would be a threat to all if getting a soft lead and consenting to put it all in but we're not prepared to take that chance on the mare and whilst Maclean has form off higher marks the gelding hasn't shown much of late, unlike R'Cam who can follow up.
