ANGUS NEWZ won this race in 2008 and could do so again having made the most of a declining mark at Newmarket on Saturday. She has something to find on the figures but she's run well from considerably higher marks in the past and, crucially, relishes these conditions which may not be the case with principal rival Singeur. Singeur was only narrowly beaten over six furlongs on soft ground at this track on his reappearance but he has done almost all of his racing on a fast surface and there has to be sufficient doubt about his effectiveness under testing conditions to side with Mick Quinn's mare. Conditions could also be a problem for Star Rover but shouldn't hamper the chances of Abraham Lincoln and Red Avalanche with the latter feared most of the pair although his tendency to get behind in his races could be his undoing.
Abraham Lincoln (IRE) 20-1 (8-7) Raced center, held up, not troubled leaders, 13th of 19, 6l behind Masamah (9-1) at Ascot 5f hcap (2) gf in Jul.
Angus Newz 11-1 (9-2) Chased leaders, hung left from over 1f out, soon driven to challenge, ran on to lead well inside final furlong, readily, won at Newmarket 5f hcp 0-85 (4) gs beating Sir Geoffrey (9-0) by 1/2l, 12 ran.
Red Avalanche (IRE) 8-1 (8-6) Held up tracking leaders, pushed along and outpaced halfway, driven and stayed on inside final furlong, went 3rd near finish, 3rd of 6, 7l behind Elnawin (8-9) at Newmarket 5f cond Stakes (3) gf in Jul.
Singeur (IRE) 9-1 (9-7) Awkward leaving stalls, in rear, switched left inside final 2f, headway over 1f out, driven and stayed on strongly inside final furlong, going on close home, 4th of 16, 1 1/2l behind Monsieur Joe (9-6) at York 5f 3yo hcp 0-100 (2) gd.
Star Rover (IRE) 4-1 (8-11) Prominent, driven along halfway, no extra inside final furlong, 4th of 8, 6l behind Masta Plasta (8-11) at Nottingham 5f cond Stakes (3) gf.
