In depth

Verdict

An open handicap hurdle to start the day, but the nod goes to Ikemba ahead of Lunar Eclipse and Norton Sapphire. The last-named comes into this race in the best form, and from an in-form stable, however he may just be in the grip of the handicapper now after two wins and two seconds in his last four races so for that reason we will take him on. Lunar Eclipse won his last race in good fashion at Exeter, however a 7lb rise for that win and ground that he is yet to prove he handles makes him one that cannot be truly fancied. Water Pistol drops in grade today after a weak effort at Cheltenham, and whilst this race is far less taxing, he is winless in 37 attempts so is passed over. Seveneightsix would have claims if reproducing the form of his Leicester win, but that was back in 2005 and although lightly raced, he may be one to swerve. For the winner then, we will side with Ikemba. Admittedly it was a poor event in which he finished runner-up last time out, however he showed that he copes with the ground on that occasion and looks like one of the less exposed horses in the lineup. At a decent price then, we will go with Ikemba to small stakes.
