Royal Hector has been much improved since joining Martin Pipe this season and is taken to defy a hefty rise in the weights at the main expense of Heavenly Stride and Pure Mischief. The selection has won four out of for since joining the Pipe stable, latterly in cheeky fashion at Windsor in soft ground. A 17lb rise since then seems harsh but in all probability is fair and he looks worth a bet to make it five from five. Speed Venture showed improved form when second at Bangor last time but has gone up 5lbs since then and this looks tougher. Robert The Bruce has a long absence to overcome and of more interest may be Merryvale Man, who has conditions to suit. Haditovski has claims at the weights but is not certain to go on the ground and a bigger threat should come from Pure Mischief. The five-year-old was good value for his win at Ludlow last time and he remains feasibly well treated despite a 7lb penalty. Royal Hector has done nothing wrong this term though and has to be the selection.
