Verdict

Dan Skelton will have primed Protektorat in attempting to land back-to-back victories in this contest. The gelding makes his seasonal bow following wind surgery last month and commands major respect if in the same form as when winning last year. He did not spark in the same way on his other two starts though - including the Gold Cup. BRAVEMANSGAME (NAP) can have his measure as last season‘s King George winner and Gold Cup runner-up did nothing but improve last term and will be all the better for his close second in the Charlie Hall. He clearly holds Protektorat on Gold Cup running too. Royale Pagaille is respected for an in-form yard, but is rated 12lb behind the selection, whilst Corach Rambler became a household name at Aintree this year but is unproven when dining at the top table.
