In depth

Verdict

Patrick Haslam's yard are in fine form and can take this with Circumspect, who put in a pleasing debut at Wetherby recently, with Kalawoun and Finland perhaps his chief rivals here. Circumspect competed in a fair novices' contest at the West Yorkshire track, where not much was expected of him, so a 14 length defeat by stablemate The Pen was no major surprise. But with that run under his belt we expect to see a fair bit more here, and with nothing special in opposition we will take a chance on him. Finland was another who competed that day, when he was sent off favourite and finished around 10 lengths in front our our selection in third. However, that seems to be about as good as it gets for Ann Duffield's gelding who does not seem to be open to anything like the improvement of the selection. Of the remainder, Kalawoun makes his hurdling debut and has been going well at home. With proven ability from a flat win in France, he is respected, but we take Circumspect to land the prize.
