In depth

Verdict

With no obvious pace setter in the line up this may be best left to the speedy Welsh Emperor, who is preferred to Quito and Polar Ben. The last mentioned gave little sign of encouragement on his reappearance behind Hurricane Alan in a Group 2 at Sandown last month but this represents a drop in class for James Fanshawe's gelding who is entitled to improve for the run. Mark Tompkins has his team in good form at present so St Petersburg cannot be discounted but the son of Polar Falcon needs to improve to trouble the judge and of more interest may be Quito. David Chapman's evergreen eight-year-old resumed winning ways when landing Newmarket's Abernant Stakes last month and can never be discounted. He rates a bigger threat than Marcus Tregoning's Meshaheer, who may need another run or two before showing his best. The vote then goes to Welsh Emperor who admittedly has yet to win over seven furlongs but has run well over the trip before and the six-year-old has ground conditions to suit. With a lack of pace in the race Robert Winston should be able to use the gelding's finishing kick to good effect.
