In depth
Verdict
This is a competitive looking nursery, but Rosthwaite has proven handicaqp form and is probably the safest option; Highland Song, Azygous and Charles Darwin may give him most to do. At 1,000 guineas, Rosthwaite is probably the cheapest of John Fretwell's numerous two-tear-old purchases, but the Ed McMahon-trained filly has already proved herself to be something of a bargain, winning a nursery over today's course and distance by a game short head from Miss Lovat. She had earlier shaped well at Nottingham, winning the race on the 'wrong' side when finishing seventh behind Cree in a big field of maidens. A three pounds rise in the weights seems far from harsh and Rosthwaite is taken to follow up. Highland Song beat One Trick Pony by a length and a half on his debut in a Musselburgh seller, and although six pounds worse off here he should be able to confirm the form and might well be in the shake up. Azygous is quite hard to assess, having won his first two starts on the sand at Lingfield before being far from disgraced on his sole start on turf in the big sales race at Newbury. Charles Darwin scored well, and deservedly so, at Doncaster last time and should be thereabouts off this four pounds higher mark. Garlogs and City For Conquest are a couple of others worthy of consideration, but for the selection we'll stick with Rosthwaite.
