More competitive than most claimers, the comparative class of NORTHERN EMPIRE might just be enough to see him emerge in front here, with Creative, Brut and Howards Tipple all capable of winning. The selection has been running just about as consistently as you could hope for, given that he has largely been kept to claiming and selling company this season and when in this grade he is one to keep on the right side of. Fast ground and this trip suit and if he can perform to his optimum then he looks good enough. If he doesn't, then Creative may take advantage. The Mark Tompkins-trained gelding has run well in defeat here before and acts on any ground. He has a bit to find at the weights though and is just opposed. Brut relishes 5f and fast ground and is 11lbs lower than when winning a Catterick handicap last year, but he has had 12 subsequent attempts to enhance his CV and although he looks likely to be competitive he is no good thing. Howards Tipple won a similar contest over course and distance last July and looks likely to get very competitive at today's weights, but Northern Empire gets the nod.
