Verdict

A competitive start to the second day of Goodwood's May Trials meeting with 20 runners facing the starter over six furlongs and, following a good second at York last week, Colonel Cotton is taken to go one better at the main expense of Idle Power and Sundried Tomato. The last mentioned, like the selection, found just one too good last time when second at Thirsk but we prefer the form of Colonel Cotton's run on the Knavesmire. Neville Callaghan's colt was collared close home by Matty Tun that day and it is interesting that Frankie Dettori perseveres with him. Idle Power has conditions to suit and should be spot on after a couple of pipe openers. David Nicholls saddles two, with marginal preference for Loyal Tycoon over Candleriggs, who is on a long losing sequence. Backers of Banjo Bay will hope that they get a better run for their money than at Ascot last time, when James Given's horse unseated his rider on leaving the starting stalls.
