In depth

Verdict

The four-year-old STATE CROWN (NAP) is only up 3lb for a comfortable all-the-way victory in a Class 3 handicap at Newton Abbot and should have further improvement in him, though he probably wouldn't want much more rain. Winning bumper Leroy Brown has been disappointing over timber and was beaten in a Stratford seller when last seen in September but Mr Shady would have a chance on his second at Wetherby in November and he's fit from the Flat while John Betjeman has been narrowly beaten a couple of times recently, though a career strike-rate of 0-27 hardly inspires confidence.
