Frankie Dettori has a date with destiny, and he can finally capture the so-far elusive blue riband courtesy of Authorized, with Aqaleem and a legion of O'Brien challengers headed by Archipenko taken to chase him home. It is a fact that the Dante form pays to follow when looking for the Derby winner, and indeed two of the past three winners on the Knavesmire, North Light and Motivator, have followed up at Epsom. Taking the ground into consideration, Authorized sluiced through the conditions when landing last year's Racing Post Trophy, and handled the ground far better than the rest on his reappearance at York. Shortened up considerably for this after that emphatic success, he has the going in his favour today, is still on the upgrade, and as he is reckoned to be better than the 1992 winner Dr Devious by his trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam, everything looks in place for Frankie Dettori, at the age of 36, to finally claim his place in the Epsom hall of fame. In truth, Aidan O'Brien does not know which of his team has the best chance, so he has quite wisely decided to run no less than eight in the hope of causing an upset. On jockey bookings, Archipenko, winner of the Leopardstown Derby Trial that has produced the likes of Sinndar, High Chapparal and Galileo, has the best chance, with Mick Kinane booked, but you would not rule out one of the others, the up-and-coming Mahler perhaps, from reaching the frame. Of the home contingent, Lingfield Derby Trial winner Aqaleem looks best, and it must be remembered that he did finish ahead of Authorized at Newbury last term. From the stable that sent out Sir Percy 12-months ago, he is reported to have done a sparkling piece of work midweek, and if handling the ground can at least make a race of it. However, we fully expect a flying dismount from Frankie in the winner's enclosure.
