AVON RIVER drops in grade today and is taken as the leading player in the quartet. Pycian is a big threat, while the pieces are also fitting together well for Reeds Bay. The last named won a very modest race at Haydock earlier in the month, but needs to improve to follow up at this level. A similar statement applies to Victoire De Lyphar, who quickened up nicely to win over six furlongs here last time out. The seventh furlong added to stiffer opposition may find him out today. Pycian is bred to be effective at the distance and, having worked hard to land a Haydock maiden when last seen out, he has a likeable attitude. However, Avon River showed stacks of promise when wining at Kempton last month and, having failed to handle the track at Epsom in the Woodcote Stakes at the Derby Meeting; he is strongly fancied to bounce back in this easier grade on this much more conventional surface.
