In depth

Verdict

An inevitably competitive Cork Grand National in which RECITE A PRAYER is taken to go one better after coming home a highly creditable runner-up in the Kerry equivalent at Listowel in September. He is up 2lb as a result but is a progressive sort who should have a fair bit more still to offer at the age of seven. His stable companion, Captain Kangaroo, remains a maiden over fences after five starts but is steadily getting the hang of things and can go well off his featherweight which actually sees him 2lb out of the handicap. Gordon Elliott fields a quartet of challengers, of which the returning Braeside and the well-treated Glenloe make most appeal. Any shortlist should also include the admirably consistent Siberian Prince and this year's Midlands Grand National winner, Screaming Colours, despite the latter having to give weight away all round.
