Hawatif is tempting from the foot of the weights, with Franny Norton booked and the number two stall, but she's never encountered ground with soft in the going description in 14 previous starts. She's likely to go close if handling conditions but VISCOUNT BARFIELD is just preferred for the in-form Andrew Balding yard. A winner on his last two visits here, once on forecast conditions, he was staying on to some effect in a competitive York handicap last time and makes plenty of appeal returned to the scene of this season's successes, having been handed a good berth in stall three. Courier's attempt to land a four-timer may be scuppered by a 'car park' draw but the likes of Dilgura, Bertiewhittle and triple course winner, Gabrial The Tiger, are all respected.
