In depth

Verdict

The lightly raced Enhancer makes plenty of appeal and is selected in preference to The Grocers Curate, Darrias and Flying Druid, who are others to place high on the shortlist. The Grocers Curate made a pleasing debut at Kempton in January and was not given a hard time once his chance had gone near the finish. He looks every inch a chaser but he should be capable of paying his way over timber before too long. He is one to seriously consider if he is well supported in spite of his lack of experience. Darrias also merits a second look as he shaped with plenty of promise at Wincanton last month. He is sure to have derived plenty of benefit from that run and he too should be capable of making this a real test. However, he did create the impression that he needs further, as was only staying on past beaten horses on that occasion. He may be vulnerable to something with a turn of foot near the finish. Flying Druid on the other hand is making his debut over hurdles this afternoon and, despite impressing with his attitude in bumpers, he may find at least a couple have an edge on him today. Therefore, we prefer the claims held by Enhancer this time around. The seven-year-old looked a lively prospect when he won a handful of bumpers for Alan Swinbank earlier in his career. He has obviously endured a few training problems since then but showed that he retains enough ability to at least pick up a race of this nature by making the frame in his two starts over hurdles so far. Enhancer's new yard are obviously keen for him to be given every assistance in the saddle and Jim Culloty's mount can represent great value in a tricky opener where the market should provide some potent clues.
