CHECKERBOARD beat a 125-rated rival off level weights last time, so off that mark must himself have good claims of doubling up ahead of Award Winner and Work Boy. It could be a good day for Howard Johnson as his horse looks to have real claims of shouldering top weight to victory. This trip is ideal and he won nicely last time from Lease Lend who is a decent yardstick, so further success awaits despite the fact he's got slightly easier ground to contend with today. Award Winner won last time too and must have a chance despite the 7lb rise as all ground comes alike to him. Brendan Powell has his string in decent order and he's a real threat to the hopes of our selection. Work Boy arrives in fine form having won with plenty in hand last time but the drop in trip has to be of some concern, despite the fact he cruised into contention that day. Sue Smith's charge has scope for improvement but all things being equal may be done for speed against these, although rain will help his chances. King Fontaine was behind Award Winner last time but this inconsistent sort is capable of reversing that if putting it all together, but the biggest threat to our shortlist may come from Western Gale if he's fit for this return. The market will help us on that score, as it will with Description who looks the stable number two but would become of interest if supported. Our Jim was behind Award Winner last time and doesn't look set to reverse the form, so in what should prove a fiercely competitive handicap chase our narrow vote goes to Checkerboard.
