In depth

Verdict

The market should be heeded in a bumper full of newcomers, with the sensible punters keeping stakes to a minimum, and a tentative vote goes to ROYAL SWAIN ahead of Eagle Owl and Bow Badger. Eagle Owl is a neatly named son of Hawk Wing, and is a half brother to two winners, one of whom was sharp enough to score over 10 furlongs. His dam was also placed in group class on the flat and the yard has had winners in recent days so a bold showing can be expected. Bow Badger is by Sadler's Wells and his grand dam won the Irish Oaks so he could be anything. Hailing from the in-form Howard Johnson camp Bow Badger is another to note. Royal Swain is a half brother to the prolific Programme Girl, also trained by Alan Swinbank. The trainer has a fine record in bumpers and it looks significant that such a well bred newcomer is given an early outing. Royal Swain can make a winning debut.
