In depth
Verdict
There is not much strength in depth to the opener, with Smirfy's Gold selected ahead of Benllech and possibly Madrigale. Smirfy's Gold cost 20,000 guineas and, being related to a number of winners, would not have to be out of the ordinary to land a modest opener. The drop back in trip should see Vaunt in a better light after a fair run last time in first-time blinkers, but he is becoming a very frustrating type. Benllech has not really built on earlier promise but, if getting back to his best, he could not be ruled out. The tongue-tie that was on for a disappointing effort last time is off again today. Pernomente has at least bagged some money this season and, in a race where few can be given strong mentions, can't be ruled out of a good run. Game Lady has shown more than enough in two starts to suggest that she ought to play some sort of a part here too. Finally, Split The Wind and Madrigale are interesting newcomers but we will side with another debutant, Smirfy's Gold.
