In depth

Verdict

Hernando Cortes was capable on the level and made an encouraging debut over hurdles when chasing home Sienna Storm at Cartmel so Don McCain's colt has to be respected but Solent was different class to these on the flat and is given the vote in the hope that he can translate that ability over timber with Wood Fern rated the pick of the remainder. Frederick Ozanam made a pleasing debut over timber having seemingly lost his way on the level and makes more appeal than Sky Calling, who has given little sign of encouragement in two starts in bumpers. Wood Fern has shown a capable and consistent level of form and Don McCain's gelding warrants respect but, if translating flat ability over timber, Solent will be hard to beat.
