Roger Varian doesn’t send many this far north but those that travel boast a solid strike-rate and Monsieur Noir will be popular. His only win came over 6f on faster ground but he does handle this surface. Sparklealot was always holding Saturday’s Chester winner Parys Mountain at Catterick last month and is a pound better off with that one but QUEEN’S SARGENT and Maggies Angel are other recent winners entitled to respect, particularly the former whose Thirsk victory has been franked. His stable companion, Tommy Taylor, also warrants a mention having slipped down the weights this year.
