Injuries mount for Premiership title hopefuls

Bath head coach Steve Meehan was dissatisfied with the manner of his side's victory over Newcastle. Despite an 11th win in 15 Guinness Premiership games, Meehan compained that Bath failed to find any fluency against the mid-table Falcons. "We rarely got into our game," he said. "Given all the changes and given the emotional and physical effort attached to the win over Bristol and the short turnaround afterwards, yes I am pleased. "It was an untidy sort of game but one that showed an awful lot of character." Meehan also has to contend with more injuries ahead of a tricky visit to Harlequins next weekend, most notably a head injury to full-back Joe Maddock.

Concussion

"Joe needs an X-ray after getting a bang just above the eye," said Meehan. "Andrew Higgins also had to come off after a head knock - he didn't really know where he was." Newcastle director of rugby John Fletcher was left regretting the absence of his clutch of England players, including Jonny Wilkinson. He said: "The difference in the game was the inside backs of Bath and the way they controlled the game. It's always tough when your own backs go away en masse and that's the area where we were found lacking. "We lost direction, especially when we had to replace our fly-half, Steve Jones, with a scrum-half, James Grindal. "As for the rest of the game I thought we had parity in the set piece, territory and opportunity."
