Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnell discuss the Lions' defeat to the Highlanders

Will Greenwood urged the Lions to stick to their gameplan and not get lured into New Zealand's 'all-court game'.

The Sky Sports pundit was speaking after the Lions' 23-22 loss to the Highlanders on Tuesday, which followed their encouraging victory over the Crusaders in Christchurch on Saturday.

"I think the key is just to be patient," said Greenwood. "Not to get sucked into that attacking all-court game that clearly down here the All Blacks - or the New Zealanders - are better at.

"At one stage we were talking about it off camera, saying 'we think they are kicking a little bit too much', but they had a game plan.

Highlights of the Lions' 23-22 loss to the Highlanders

"It's one of the great things in sport; if you have a game plan and you believe in it, and you wholeheartedly commit to it, you can pick up some pretty big scalps."

Scott Quinnell believes the Lions have no reason to panic after the loss, with the closed roof at the Forsyth Barr Stadium providing an environment atypical of what they will experience during the rest of their tour.

"Don't worry, because we're not going to have conditions like this again in New Zealand," said Quinnell. "It's perfect here; perfect conditions, no problem at all - no wind, no rain, and that played a little bit against the Lions.

"There was a couple of times where we felt that they played well against the Crusaders, where they could push the ball just in behind, and use the dew - as it was on that occasion - to get in, to get the ball skidding along the floor, get the forwards on the front foot, get the backs on the front foot.

"They made a huge amount of gains by defensively being very, very strong in that game, and the conditions played into that. You can't do that at all [in Dunedin]. It invites you to play rugby... and by playing rugby they've made a lot of mistakes."
