Steven Shingler slotted a 77th-minute penalty to hand Scarlets a 22-20 win over Treviso in the PRO12 on Sunday.

Scarlets moved to the top of the Guinness PRO12 with victory over the Italian side at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo.

Two tries from No 8 Morgan Allen and one from Canada winger DTH van der Merwe handed the Welsh side their eighth PRO12 win of the season.

Sam Christie scored two tries for the home side to go with a second-half effort from Edoardo Gori to keep Treviso in the hunt until the end, but poor kicking at goal cost the Italians a possible win.

Christie's second try gave Treviso a one-point lead in the 74th minute before replacement Shingler kicked the penalty that won the game with four minutes remaining.

Treviso got off to the perfect start when Christie went over after just seven minutes. Kiwi Jayden Hayward started the move with a superb break on halfway. He shipped it wide to winger Andrea Pratichetti who sent Christie away with an inside ball for a 7-0 lead.

The lead lasted just four minutes, however, with Allen dragging three tacklers over the line with him as he touched down to give fly-half Aled Thomas an easy conversion to level the scores.

Scarlets loosehead Rob Evans then sent a looping pass to try machine Van der Merwe who dived in at the corner, putting the visitors in front for the first time after 26 minutes.

Thomas failed with the touchline conversion, and when Hayward slotted a shot at goal it was 12-10 to Scarlets at the break.

Allen made sure Scarlets profited from their first trip into the opposition half after the restart, crashing over from close range to make it 19-10 following the conversion.

Gori gave the hosts hope after 58 minutes, collecting his own kick ahead to score, but after Hayward missed the conversion the Scarlets held onto a four-point lead.

Hayward missed another conversion when Christie crossed for his second with seven minutes remaining, and it cost his side at least a draw when Shingler was on target with a late penalty to secure the win.
