Jerome Kaino is back training with New Zealand ahead of Saturday's Rugby Championship game against South Africa.

A personal issue kept Kaino out of the All Blacks' first three games - back-to-back wins over Australia and victory against Argentina.

And the 81-cap flanker will have to wait for a recall, according to assistant coach Ian Foster, who said: "He has had one provincial game, and we're keen for him to have another.

"He has been out of the game for a little while and he's got to show us he is in the right sort of condition to come back. But it's great having him back."

Lock Sam Whitelock endorsed that view, saying: "He brings that harder edge to the environment.

"Whether it be walking through lineouts, or doing the physical stuff, it's good to have that older, experienced guy that demands we compete."

Kaino's duties have been shared by Liam Squire and Vaea Fifita, who missed training on Tuesday with a sore shoulder having scored an eye-catching try against Argentina on Saturday.

The All Blacks overcame a spirited Pumas side in New Plymouth.

"They were both pretty special in what they did," Foster said. "They're both learning still, and there are areas in both their games where they've still go to get some greater clarity on the roles we need them to do.

"But it was great seeing them both go out on the park and express themselves with their athleticism."
