New Zealand are facing a growing injury list ahead of their Test series against the British and Irish Lions which begins later this month.
Dane Coles, the Hurricanes' captain, has become a major doubt for the three-Test series, while towering lock Brodie Retallick has handed the All Blacks a further injury scare.
Coles, the 30-year-old hooker, has been sidelined with concussion since March 18, and has now been ruled out of the Hurricanes' Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs on Friday.
"It's bad news for the All Blacks and bad news for all of New Zealand really," said Hurricanes coach John Plumtree.
"He hasn't been able to train hard enough at this stage. It's hard to say whether he'll be available for any of the Tests or the first Test."
Meanwhile, Chiefs lock Retallick will also miss the Wellington clash, having suffered a concussion concern of his own.
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie said the 26-year-old took a head knock in last week's win over the Waratahs, and was being left out as a precaution.
"He took a knock, obviously, in the weekend, and he still had a headache yesterday, so not enough time to pass the protocols, so he's out for the weekend," said Rennie.
"He did pass the test and we could have put him back on, but we erred on the side of caution there, so I'm happy we did that. He said he's not feeling too bad, but we're not going to risk that."
However, he did not believe the setback would impede Retallick's prospects of joining up with the All Blacks squad.
World Cup-winning All Blacks coach Hansen will be desperate for Retallick to make a prompt recovery in order to capitalise on the lock's qualities when the Lions series begins.
Further All Blacks on the sidelines include Kieran Read (thumb) and Jerome Kaino (knee), while Ben Smith (concussion) and Ryan Crotty (rib) were unable to finish last weekend's Crusaders-Highlanders' clash after picking up injuries.
The three-Test series between the All Blacks and the Lions starts on June 24, with all games live on Sky Sports including tomorrow's second tour match against the Blues on Sky Sports 1 HD from 8am.
