Will Genia is set to miss Australia's clash with England at Twickenham on Saturday after Stade Francais denied him permission to play.
The match is classified as an an out-of-window Test so there is no obligation for the French club to release the former Queensland Reds star.
The 28-year-old travelled with the Wallabies to London on Sunday, but if their second request fails, he would return to Stade for their Top 14 clash with Bayonne on Saturday.
"Right now, from the conversations we've had with Paris, they're not releasing him," said Wallabies coach Michael Cheika.
"We'll have another crack and see what we can do, but it seems unlikely with the French, they obviously place more importance on their game for Will than our international.
"That's the way the rules are, so we'll just have to deal with it.
"We asked last night after the game and that was the response they came back with."
Genia's absence would open the door for Nick Phipps to return to the starting halfback spot that he held in June when the 74-Test veteran was injured.
Australia are also likely to be without flanker Dean Mumm, who will appear before the judiciary following a citing for his illegal tackle against Irish prop Tadhg Furlong.
The Wallabies will be looking to finish their tour on a high and end England's 13-match unbeaten run after their hopes of a first tour Grand Slam in 32 years were ended by Ireland.
