David Pocock will miss the rest of the Rugby Championship after breaking his hand in Australia's 36-20 win over Argentina in Perth.
The Wallabies flanker will undergo surgery which will rule him out of Australia's final two games against South Africa in Pretoria and Argentina in London.
Pocock could return for the final Bledisloe Cup match against New Zealand in Auckland on October 22.
"Really disappointed to be ruled out of #Rugby Championship," tweeted Pocock. "Surgery on my hand once the swelling goes down. Thanks for all the support."
Pocock has been plagued by injuries in recent years, undergoing knee reconstruction surgery in 2013 and 2014, and fracturing his eye socket against England three months ago.
However, the 28-year-old remains a key player in the Wallabies side and his absence will be a blow in the race to finish second to the All Blacks.
Melbourne Rebels loose forward Sean McMahon could be considered to replace Pocock after impressing off the bench against the Pumas.
However, his Super Rugby team mate Lopeti Timani, who made his Test debut on Saturday, offers a more bulky No 8 option.
