Saracens and England forward Maro Itoje will undergo tests in hospital after he suffered a facial injury during Sunday's loss to Harlequins.

The 23-year-old had to be replaced in the 48th minute of the match at the Twickenham Stoop and Saracens will now have to wait for news of the 2017 World Rugby Player of the Year nominee.

The club's director of rugby Mark McCall said: "Maro has gone to hospital with a facial injury, so we'll get an update in the next 24 hours.

"It's too early to say what the damage is."

With Itoje off the pitch, Saracens conceded a try with just 90 seconds left to suffer a 20-19 defeat, their third consecutive Premiership loss.

They are nine points behind leaders Exeter and McCall added: "We were authors of our downfall, as we weren't smart or intelligent, and chucked the game away.

"There was a lot of effort from us, but it was ultimately wasted effort and the defeat was self-inflicted.

"We got ourselves into a winning position but we gave away stupid penalties and we've got to be better than that.

"Our situation is not ideal but we are OK, as we are still third in the Premiership and are well placed in our European group."
