Highlanders player Tevita Nabura has been suspended for six weeks for a kung fu-style kick in midair to an opponent's head in a Super Rugby match.
Nabura leapt into the air to catch a kick in the Highlanders' game against New South Wales Waratahs last weekend, then stretched out his right foot and connected with Waratahs wing Cameron Clark on the side of his face.
Nabura was sent off in the game, which New Zealand's Highlanders lost 41-12.
Super Rugby organizer SANZAAR said a disciplinary committee considered a 12-week ban for the 25-year-old Nabura, which would have ruled him out of the rest of the season. It was reduced to six weeks because of his early guilty plea, his inexperience and his "remorse".
With the Highlanders chasing a playoff place, Nabura is suspended until the last round of the regular season starting on July 13.
