Wasps hopeful Kurtley Beale could play in September

Wasps chief Dai Young says Kurtley Beale's knee injury is "not catastrophic" and hopes to see the new signing playing in September.

Having agreed a one-year deal with Wasps for next season, the Waratahs back promptly suffered a patella tendon injury which will sideline him for four to six months.

But rugby director Young says Wasps are philosophical about the injury and will not be rushing the Australia international back into action.

"The first thing to say is our thoughts go out to Kurtley," said Young. "You never want to see a player being injured. So that was our first concern, making sure he's okay.

"He's not our player yet, so we have got limited information of where he is. But the information that we have got, it is pretty much that it's four to six months.

"It's obviously not ideal but it's not catastrophic for us, which means hopefully he'll be playing in September. If he's not right in September and it's a little bit longer, then it's a little bit longer, because we certainly won't rush him.

"Thankfully, it's not as bad as first reported. We're still waiting for the full medical report but there's no reason to suggest any different from what we've all been told.

"It's part and parcel of professional sport. Players do get injured and we're always going to support them and work with them to get back sooner rather than later."

Thomas Young of Wasps runs in to score a try

Wasps have a huge game against Exeter at Sandy Park on Saturday in the Aviva Premiership semi-final and will have a fairly full squad to select from, with the exception of Young's son Thomas, a back-row forward.

"Thomas is the only one that's definitely out for the rest of the season," said Young.

"He's got a partial tear of his hamstring tendon, which is pretty much eight to 10 weeks. There's a double whammy, in that he's done something to his shoulder that would put him out for six weeks.

"Siale (Piutau) is still struggling a little with that ankle injury he picked up, but that's pretty much it."
