Former England Saxons centre Dominic Waldouck will join Newcastle Falcons on trial.
The 28-year-old, who began his career with fellow Aviva Premiership side London Wasps, is currently playing for the Ohio Aviators in the USA's PRO Rugby division.
Speaking to the club's official website, Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: "Dom is going to come on trial with us for a month to see how he goes.
"He is playing over in the USA at the moment in their new tournament, he comes to us in late July and will be with us throughout August."
After a nine-year spell with Wasps, where he made 114 appearances scoring 85 points, Waldouck moved to Northampton and then later London Irish but his time there was largely unsuccessful and he moved to Ohio for the inaugural PRO Rugby tournament.
But the Falcons have decided to give the former Heineken Cup winner a trial and Richards explained what the club's motives were.
"Dom has been on the Aviva Premiership circuit for a while, six or so years ago he was going to be the next big thing but a couple of injuries have hampered his progression," he said.
"He has now played two or three seasons without significant injury and seems to be back into the groove, so it could end up being an opportunity which suits both parties."
The Falcons have three pre-season friendlies in August; they travel to Nottingham and host Doncaster Knights before a trip to Murrayfield to face Pro12 side Edinburgh.
