Ireland are hopeful Sean O'Brien will be fit to face Wales on Sunday after missing their training session on Wednesday with a 'tight hamstring'.

Flanker O'Brien was the only Ireland player not to participate in their session at Carton House giving Joe Schmidt something of a headache ahead of their opening match of the Six Nations.

Leinster centre Garry Ringrose was also in attendance but is not a candidate to join the squad, according to forwards coach Simon Easterby, who also offered an update on O'Brien's condition.

Easterby said: "Everyone trained apart from Sean [O'Brien]. He stood out of training today, but it was more precautionary than anything.

"We've got Friday and Saturday, because we've got a longer week this week we're into the Sunday game. So we're in a good place, we feel pretty comfortable."

Will Greenwood casts his eye over the Ireland squad and gives his prediction for how they'll do in the Six Nations

"Sean was just a tight hamstring. There's nothing unusual there, it's something that he might have had in the past and other players have these things. You've just got to manage him.

"He doesn't have to train again until Friday, so we're pretty comfortable with the amount of work he's got in in the early part of this week and last week to feel that we could manage his tightness."
