Jonny Gray believes Scotland's Six Nations campaign has been a disappointing one, despite their Calcutta Cup victory over England in round three.
Scotland close their campaign against Italy in Rome on Saturday aiming to secure their third win of the campaign and their first away from Murrayfield in 2018.
Gregor Townsend's side were being touted as possible Six Nations winners this year and despite some cause for optimism, defeats in Cardiff and Dublin ultimately scuppered their chances of success.
"There have been a lot of positives so far but a lot of things we're disappointed with," said Gray. "Obviously the two results against Wales and Ireland are very frustrating.
"Overall we are disappointed and that starts with the Wales game, but looking at the way we bounced back against France and against England, it's been mixed.
"We are happy with the wins and some of the stuff we've been doing but we have to be honest with ourselves and we know we need to get better.
"It will be a tough challenge to go to Rome against Italy who have been playing good rugby and will want to finish with a win."
Scotland lost 34-7 to Wales and 28-8 against Ireland on their travels and Gray admits he is at a loss to explain why they struggle so much away from Edinburgh.
"I can't answer it," he added. "At the weekend we were up against a very good team, and all credit to Ireland for winning the Six Nations.
"We went there to win and didn't do that, so we are disappointed with that but there were opportunities there.
"There are a lot of things to fix, but at the same time there are positives to take."
