Gordon Reid admits Scotland were guilty of believing their own hype ahead of the Six Nations.

Scotland made impressive progress under former head coach Vern Cotter and, with the good work continuing under new boss Gregor Townsend, much was expected of them before the tournament began.

But a 34-7 defeat to Wales in their opening game in Cardiff served as a timely warning there is still much to be done ahead of Saturday's match with England at Murrayfield, despite a confidence-boosting 32-26 victory over France in the last round of matches.

"I think there is a lot more to come from us," said London Irish front-rower Reid.

"Against Wales everybody hyped us up - 'Scotland are going to win, Scotland are going to win' - and I think we obviously believed that.

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend has made six changes to his squad for Saturday's Calcutta Cup clash with England at Murrayfield.

"We believed we could just go and win, just needed to show up - and as you all know, we didn't do that well. The French game we knew we needed to put it right.

"Gregor as a coach, he identifies that, wants us to push forward and be the best we can be, as a player and as a person too. I think there's a lot more to come and hopefully that will come out against England."

Scotland have not beaten old rivals England in 10 years and although Reid did score a try in the same fixture at Twickenham last year, it was not enough to prevent a 61-21 defeat.

Hooker Fraser Brown was sent to the sin-bin just two minutes into the game and Reid has warned his team-mates they must be better disciplined on Saturday if they are to avoid another drubbing.

"It showed the importance of keeping a lid on things the last time we were down there," he added.

"Last year we let our emotions get to us a little bit too much and that resulted in them beating us by a hefty amount.
